India is a diverse country where we can see people from different kinds of traditions, cultures, religions and who speak different languages. To inculcate the concept of ‘unity in diversity’ among children, the Union government came up with the initiative of ‘Bharatiya Basha Summer Camp’, where children of a particular state are taught the language of another state.
As a part of this initiative, Punjabi children are being taught the Telugu language in their government schools. A clip of Punjabi teachers and students speaking and learning Telugu has gone viral on social media. As per this initiative, students must learn at least five simple sentences in other languages. In the video, we can see young girls standing in a line, speaking in different languages. While the first girl says, “What is your name?” the second girl says, “Aapka Naam Kya Hai?” and the third girl says, “Mee Peru Emiti?” Along with Telugu words, children are being taught the Telugu numericals in Punjabi schools.
On the other side, children in Andhra Pradesh are being taught Punjabi and children in Telangana are being taught Haryanvi. However, this is a more intensive program than the summer camp. Reportedly, AP students are being taught Punjabi sentences and alphabets. In Telangana, Haryanvi is being taught in around 26,000 schools. In April this year, 50 students from Haryana visited Hyderabad and stayed here for a few weeks to learn language and culture of the state.
