Indian nurse Nimsha Priya is convicted of murdering Yemeni citizen Talal Abido Mehdi and would be executed on July 16.
Social activist Samuel Jerome Baskaran, who is involved in negotiations with theYemen Yemeni government officials and Talal’s family, said the public prosecutor issued the execution orders. However, the Indian government can still intervene in the issue and try to save her life.
On pardon from Talal’s family, Samuel said they had made an offer to the family during the last meeting and are waiting for a response. Nimisha, a native of Kerala, was convicted of muder and handed out deathe sentence by a local court in Yemen in June 2018. The 38-year-old worked as a nurse for several years in Yemen.
With Talal’s support, she ran a clinic in Yemen. Reportedly, she faced mental, physical and financial abuse, which, she could not tolerate for long and murdered him.
The death sentence issued by a trial court was upheld by the Yemeni supreme court. The order has been with the prosecutor since January, 2025. Since then, Nimisha’s fate has been uncertain, depending on a pardon from Talal’s family.
Nimisha’s mother Prema Kumari, a domestic worker in Kochi, has been camping on Yemen for the lastone year. The Ministry of External Affairs said it would extend all help to Nimisha and her family last year after Yemeni president approved the death sentence.
Prema Kumari moved the Delhi High Court last year to secure an exemption from the travel ban to strife-torn Yemen.
