A massive landslide in Sudan’s Marra Mountains has wiped out an entire village, killing more than 1,000 people. According to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), only one person is believed to have survived the disaster, which struck on August 31 after days of relentless rain.
The SLM/A, led by Abdelwahid Mohamed Nour, said the village has been completely flattened, with men, women, and children buried under the debris. The group has appealed to the United Nations and global relief agencies for urgent support to recover bodies and provide humanitarian aid.
Many of the victims were already displaced by the ongoing civil war between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces. Families had fled the violence in North Darfur and taken refuge in the Marra Mountains, where food and medicine were already scarce.
The conflict, now in its second year, has forced millions from their homes and pushed over half of Sudan’s population into severe hunger. Meanwhile, fighting continues around Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, worsening the crisis for those who survived the disaster.
