Money Gaming Banned: UPI Transactions Go Down!

The central cabinet recently took the big decision of imposing a ban on all the gaming applications that involve real money. Subsequently, several online gaming sites that involve real money have shut down their operations.

In this context, something very interesting is happening as it is being primarily established that the volume of the UPA transactions have gone down marginally after the ban on money oriented gaming sites.

Reportedly the UPA transaction volume went down by ₹2500 crore in August after the central Cabinet imposed a ban on money oriented gaming sites.

The Rs 2,500 crore dip in UPI transaction value in August 2025 is attributed to the ban on online real-money gaming, causing a 25% drop in gaming transactions. To put that into perspective, the total UPI value was Rs 24.85 lakh crore in August, which is down slightly from July’s Rs 25.08 lakh crore.

It appears that the volume of the money that was being transferred to these online gaming sites has been pretty significant and the margin dip in the transaction volume is clearly implying the same. This perhaps also shows the kind of addiction that gamers had towards these platforms.
