Few stories in Telugu cinema are as quietly radical as that of Rakesh Mahankali. In 2007, while comfortably placed in a pharmaceutical family business in Hyderabad, Rakesh set aside convention to chase his love for filmmaking.
Most of the stories he has chosen under his production banner have earned critical acclaim for their emotional depth and award-worthy storytelling.
It all began with Vinayakudu (2008), a tender portrayal of self-acceptance that garnered the prestigious Second Best Film Nandi Award.
Breaking ground, its sequel Village lo Vinayakudu (2009) offered Telugu cinema one of its first true sequel series and proved Rakesh’s commitment to honest, character-driven narratives.
A string of heartfelt projects followed- Kudirithe Cup Coffee (2011) charmed with breezy romance, while Paathshala (2014) addressed coming-of-age struggles and went on to earn a Best Film nomination at the IIFA South Awards and recognition at the Telangana State Gaddar Awards.
Rakesh made a mark as associate producer with the 2017 hit Anando Brahma, a horror-comedy masterstroke that balanced critical acclaim with box office returns.
His film Dear Nanna (2023) clinched a Silver Remi Award at the Houston International Film Festival, underlining Rakesh’s global creative ambition.
The fresh release, Sundarakanda, is a reaffirmation of Rakesh Mahankali’s guiding principle- cinema with soul, shaped by empathy, innovation, and quiet perseverance.
Eighteen years on, his journey stands as an ode to the power of conviction and the possibilities that open up when passion overrules fear.
