Modi Lays Foundation for IIT Tirupati Phase – B expansion, Sanctions 2,313 crores
Tirupati, is now steadily making its name in the map of India’s educational map. On Saturday, Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for Phase B construction of IIT Tirupati, marking yet another milestone in the city’s growth.
With the Central government already approving a budget of ₹2,313 crore, the expansion is a massive step forward. Out of this, ₹1,243 crore has been marked for construction and ₹517 crore for equipment and furniture. Designs for the new phase are almost ready and tenders will soon be floated. Once completed, this phase will transform IIT Tirupati into a world-class hub for innovation and research beyond just academics.
At the ceremony, Tirupati MP M. Gurumoorthy hailed the institute as one of the most beautiful campuses in India, lauding its commitment to sustainability and green technology. He credited the visionary leadership of Professor KN Satyanarayana for shaping the institution’s progress and praised IIT Tirupati’s contributions in critical research areas like semiconductors and energy storage. He urged the institute to take on locally relevant challenges, ensuring the benefits of its research reach the regional ecosystem.
IIT Tirupati has already made its mark in national rankings. In the NIRF 2025 rankings, it secured 57th place in the Engineering category, improving from 61st last year. The institute has also stood out with high placement packages touching ₹41.64 lakh per annum, a growing research portfolio worth over ₹175 crore in sponsored projects and collaborations with global institutions.
In spite of being a New IIT established in 2015 under the NDA government back then, the institution came out well and now it’s 3rd highest ranked IIT in South India competing with the more established ones like IIT Chennai and IIT Hyderabad. Its commitment to sustainability, inclusivity and innovation has earned it recognition as one of the fastest-growing IITs in the country.
For Tirupati, already famous as a regional and spiritual centre, IIT Tirupati’s expansion is another gem in its crown of progress. Alongside its growing infrastructure, healthcare and connectivity, the city is emerging as a beacon of both tradition and modernity. With Phase B, IIT Tirupati steps further into a future where education, innovation and culture walk hand in hand.
