Silent EVs to Get Sound Alerts!

The Central government has made it mandatory for all the electric vehicles to install Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) by October 1, 2027. Installation of AVAS would help the EVs, including cars, autos, trucks and buses, in emitting artificial sound, to alert the pedestrians about their movement on the roads.

Electric vehicles do not emit smoke and engine sound, which could put the life of pedestrians at risk.

In a bid to ward off the danger of the silence of the EVs to the pedestrians, the government has decided to make AVAS mandatory. Unlike the engines of the petrol/diesel vehicles, the EVs remain silent giving no indication about their movement or presence on the road. At times, this could prove to be fatal to those walking on the roads, if they crash into the EVs. To avoid such tragedies, AVAS would emit artificial sound.

The government has made it clear that all new models, including passenger and goods vehicles, that would be manufactured after October 1, 2026, should have AVAS installed during the manufacturing.

For all the existing models, AVAS has been made mandatory from October 1, 2027.

Some countries like Japan, Europe, America have made AVAS compulsory in hybrid vehicles too.
