Three people died and five others are still missing after a launch boat with 14 Indian crew members capsized during a routine transfer operation near Port of Beira in Central Mozambique.
According to the Indian High Commission, the mishap occurred on Friday when routine crew transfer was being done to a tanker vessel anchored offshore. The exact cause of the capsize remains unknown. However, an investigation is likely to be done.
The High Commission, in a statement, said: “A launch boat carrying crew members of a tanker, including 14 Indian nationals, capsized during crew transfer operations off Beira port in central Mozambique. Some of the Indian nationals involved in the accident have been rescued. Unfortunately, some Indian nationals have died in the accident, and some are still unaccounted for.”
According to reports, five Indians were rescued from the water. Of them, one is undergoing medical treatment at Beira. A consular officer from the Indian Mission has visited the Indian hospitalized and is supervising the rescue measures to the affected.
Following the mishap, the High Commission expressed condolences via social media. “Mission is in contact with families of those who have lost their lives in the unfortunate accident and is extending all possible assistance to them.” The High Commission also shared emergency numbers to reach for updates relating to the search operations.
Along with the High Commission, local authorities and maritime agencies are working in coordination to trace the missing five Indians.
