For the first time in the history of Japan after World-War – II, Japan got a woman Prime Minister named Sanae Takaichi. The 64-year-old leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) defeated opposition leader Yoshihiko Noda in a close parliament vote to secure the prime ministerial position.
Takaichi’s rise is a proud moment for Japan, where politics has long been dominated by men. However, in spite of coming from a party with liberal, she is known as a hardcore conservative, while she is often compared to Margaret Thatcher, the former British PM. She strongly supports Japan’s military, wants to rewrite its pacifist constitution, and is known for her no-nonsense attitude.
Though her victory is seen as a big step for women, some critics say it may not lead to real change in gender equality. Takaichi opposes same-sex marriage and believes that only men should succeed Japan’s imperial throne. Despite these views, many admire her for her determination and decades of political experience.
However there are some serious challenges ahead for her from rising living costs and a slowing economy to growing security threats in Asia where Japan is actively being pushed to act militarily in the East Sea. Adding to that, the U.S. President Donald Trump is visiting Japan next week, giving Takaichi her first major diplomatic test right after taking charge.
Interestingly, even before she had entered politics, she was known for riding motorcycles across the country and was part of a girls rock band.
Whether she can steady Japan’s economy and politics remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure Sanae Takaichi has already made history, becoming a symbol of how times are changing in Japan and making a place for her in the history of Japan.
