The Southern parts of Brazil have been experiencing severe storm with gutsy winds blowing at 90 km/h. The powerful storm has reportedly brought down the 90 foot tall large replica of the iconic Statue of Liberty in the city of Guaiba near Porto Alegre in Rio Grande do Sul. No casualities took place at the site as per preliminary reports.
The replica, measuring around 24 metres tall, collapsed on Monday and several videos capturing the fall have been going viral since on social media platforms. The towering structure was located in the car park of a Havan retail store. The statue can been seen tilting due to the strong gusts and then toppling from its root before falling on to the ground.
The hapless incident took place while vehicles were moving around on the busy road beside the statue. Luckily, no untoward injuries took place as the heavy structure fell down on a empty ground.
Installed in 2020, the statue stood on a 11 metre concrete base which didn’t get impact despite the huge collapse. Though who were present at the site anticipated the fall and moved away the cars to minimize the loss and damage. Guaiba Mayor Marcelo Maranta confirmed the news on social media and he appreciated the immediate reaction by the staff of Havan restaurant.
Am internal investigation has been immediately launched to determine why the structure could not withstand extreme weather conditions.
