In a tragic incident, four members of a family, including three children, died in their sleep after inhaling motorcycle exhaust fumes inside their house in Thyagaraj Nagar of Punganur town in Annamayya district early Sunday morning.
The victims were identified as Ramachandraiah (70), his grandson Karthik (15), and twin granddaughters Charitha and Chandana, both aged eight. Police shifted the bodies to a hospital for post mortem.
According to police, the motorcycle was kept running inside a room of the house throughout the night. Due to poor ventilation, exhaust fumes filled the room while the victims were asleep, leading to suffocation.
Ramachandraiah lived in the house along with his son Murali, daughter in law Revathi and their three children. Murali had recently given his motorcycle for repair. After fixing it, the mechanic reportedly advised him to keep the engine running for some time.
Following the advice, Murali parked the motorcycle inside the house and kept the engine running. He also closed the windows as he feared the noise might disturb neighbours.
That night, Ramachandraiah and the three children slept in the same room where the motorcycle was kept on the ground floor. Murali and his wife slept in another room on the upper floor.
On Sunday morning, when the room door did not open for a long time, Murali came downstairs and tried to open it with the help of neighbours. When they finally opened the door, they found all four lying dead inside the room.
Police have registered a case and started an investigation. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post mortem report.
