What was supposed to be a routine landing for a Hyderabad – Chandigarh domestic flight escalated into a chaotic situation as one of the passenger’s power bank exploded just after the arrival at the destination airport. The incident happened aboard IndiGo flight 6E 108, when it travelled from Hyderabad to Chandigarh on Tuesday afternoon.
It was a lucky escape because the battery fire took place when the aircraft was in a stationary mode on the tarmac in Chandigarh. The electronic device was in the hand luggage of a passenger and it started emitting smoke when he was about to deboard the flight. The crew of the flight immediately acted with sense and made sure that no untoward incident took place.
All passengers have been quickly evacuated following an emergency response and the crew members also deplaned without any injuries. IndiGo airlines later issued an official statement that everyone is safe and further investigation is on. It also added that necessary checks will be carried out before resumption of services and reiterated that customer safety remains top priority.
Power banks are allowed on flights only in carry-on luggage, but passengers are not allowed to use them on flights for charging phones and other devices as per the recent guidelines of DGCA. Also it is mandatory that these devices have to be kept in front of passengers so that smoke can be visible at the earliest if they catch fire, and not be kept in overhead baggage compartments.
