In what could be one of the disastrous fire accidents that happened in recent times, a restaurant in South Delhi was caught in a massive blaze today morning. The incident happened at around 9 AM in Malviya Nagar.
As per the latest reports, at least 21 people were killed in this unfortunate incident and more than 40 individuals have been injured due to the intensity of blaze. The establishment, named Flourish Stay B&B, was granted a licence by the Delhi government under its Bed and Breakfast scheme.
Officials stated that majority of those fatalities include foreigners, mainly from Central Asian and African countries and the death toll may rise.
Initial reports allege that the hotel had been granted permission to operate six rooms under the Bed and Breakfast scheme. However, the hotel authorities appears to have flouted the normal and running beyond the permissible capacity in 25 rooms, including some in the basement.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been ascertained. Fire tenders have rushed immediately to keep the blaze under control, but many people were stuck inside as the fire spread rapidly all over the building. However, firefighters have saved more than 40 individuals and reduced the number of deaths.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep regret over the loss of lives in the tragedy, announcing an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lah each to families who lost their loved ones and Rs 50,000 each to families of those who were injured.
