Standup Comedy Audiences Shouldn’t Cross The Line!

In a clip from comedian Pranit More’s show that went viral on social media platforms, Sejal Pawar was heard making remarks about male corpses and comparing the sizes of male cadavers’ genitalia. The comments sparked widespread outrage online, with many users calling them inappropriate and insensitive.

The All India Medical Students’ Association also condemned the remarks and expressed concern over the way body donation was being discussed.

While stand up comedians often push boundaries for laughs, responsibility does not end with the performer alone. Audience members who step onto the stage or participate in crowd work must also understand the impact of their words. A few seconds of attention can lead to consequences that last for years.

Not only stand up comedians, but audience, especially girls, should also be careful while giving answers during such public interactions. What may appear funny in the moment can quickly become controversial when viewed by millions online.

India is a cultural land built on values, respect and social responsibility. Blindly copying over exaggerated western style responses and shock value humour does not suit the morals of this country. Freedom of expression should not come at the cost of basic decency.
