In a shocking incident, a well known cricket player faced the heat of politics in the neighbouring Bangladesh. He is none other than former captain Shakib Al Hasan, who is one of the fewest players from the country to gain international recognition.
As per reports, unidentified miscreants have thrown a petrol bomb on the ancestral home of Shakib Al Hasan at around 08:45 PM on Wednesday. People in the area heard loud sounds as the group threw stones, broke window glasses before hurling petrol bombs at the property.
Luckily, no one was hurt or injured in this incident. Also, Shakib was not present at the house. Local police reached the spot shortly after the attack to secure the area and protect the property
The attack took place just hours after Shakib joined a virtual press interaction with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina spoke to journalists from Delhi, where she has been staying since leaving power in August 2024. Shakib’s participation in the event showed his ongoing support for Hasina’s political party, the Awami League.
Irked with his participation and support to the beleaguered political leader and her party, opponents have targeted Shakib’s house as a mark of protest and dissent. The Awami League immediately shared a video online showing the moment near Shakib’s house and claimed political opponents carried out the attack.
Shakib Al Hasan was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Magura-1 seat in early 2024 under the Awami League banner. He faces several legal cases in Bangladesh, including a murder case filed after the political changes. He he has not returned to the country since then and living in abroad.
Currently, the star cricketer lives in the United States with his family while playing in various franchise T20 leagues around the world. He has stated that he will return to Bangladesh only when authorities guarantee his safety and offer protection from legal harassment.
