The recent student gang fight in Visakhapatnam is another disturbing example of how some youngsters are getting into the wrong direction. A fight that reportedly started between two students at a school later turned into a group clash on the streets, with around 20 youngsters involved.
The incident took place on the Timmmapuram Road in Sivashakti Nagar. Reports suggest that a personal or love related issue between two students at Chandrampalem School slowly turned into a bigger dispute between two groups.
What is more worrying is that the youngsters allegedly fought openly on the road. During the clash, they reportedly stopped a biker who was passing through the area and attacked him. Police later detained 17 youngsters and registered cases against six of them, including three minors.
Reports also suggest that some of the youngsters had consumed alcohol. The group reportedly tried to create another clash on Thursday night, but fled after police arrived.
This incident should not be seen only as another fight between students. It raises a bigger question about the direction in which a section of today’s youth is moving.
In recent times, we have seen several disturbing incidents involving youngsters. From rash driving and dangerous behaviour on roads to violent fights and even attacks on teachers, such incidents are becoming a serious concern for parents, schools and society. The recent murder of school principal Roopa Reddy, allegedly by two Class 10 students, has made these concerns even more serious.
At the same time, there is another side to today’s youth that deserves equal attention.
We have seen young people, Gen Z students, coming together for meaningful protests and social causes. Some of these movements have even forced Delhi authorities to listen to their concerns and bring change.
So, the problem is not with the entire younger generation. The real concern is that a section of youngsters is being influenced by violence, social media behaviour, alcohol, peer pressure and the desire to show power.
Teenage years are a very important stage of life. A small mistake at this age can have consequences that last for years. A school dispute should never become a street fight. A personal issue should never turn into group violence.
Parents and schools cannot handle this problem alone. Youngsters also need proper guidance, counselling and a better environment to understand the difference between confidence and aggression.
The Telugu states have a huge young population, and that youth can become one of the biggest strengths of society. But if anger, violence and reckless behaviour become normal, it can become a serious social problem.
The Visakhapatnam incident should therefore be treated as a warning rather than just another crime story.
Today’s youth have the power to bring change. The question is whether that power will be used to create something meaningful or to settle personal scores on the streets.
