Of late, the soft signal from the on-field umpire is drawing much criticism in the cricketing world. We have seen a few instances in the ongoing India-England series where the third umpire had to take decisions based on the on-field umpire’s soft signals. To avoid such mishaps and confusion, the governing council of BCCI decided not to include soft signal decisions on DRS calls.
In this case, the third umpire will have to make the final decision on the dismissal. In its official note, BCCI stated, “Soft Signal: Onfield Umpire giving Soft Signal while referring the decision to the 3rd Umpire will not be applicable.” Recently, captain Virat Kohli also asked the ICC to reconsider the decision of soft signals.
“If it hits the stumps or missing the stumps, it should not matter how much the ball is clipping because it is creating a lot of confusion. One more factor that needs to be considered is how the fielding team responds to a dismissal that is claimed,” Kohli said in a press meet. Meanwhile, the cricket experts and fans are welcoming the decision made by BCCI.
