From the past four days, the entire nation has been closely watching an unprecedented political thriller unfold in Tamil Nadu with numerous twists and turns. Thalapathy Vijay’s TVK, which won 108 seats out of the 234, had met the governor three times and returned with disappointment due to lack of adequate support to stake the claim.
Finally, the nightmare has ended for Vijay and TVK as all small parties unanimously agreed to offer support for forming the fresh government in Tamil Nadu. After struggling to get the desired magic figure despite support from Congress and left parties, TVK once again turned towards two other small parties VCK and IUML and finally secured their support to surpass the majority.
So, with the latest development, Vijay will have the support of total 121 MLAs including Congress with 5 MLAs, both CPI and CPM with two each and the VCK and UML with two each. Even if the one seat vacated by Vijay is omitted, the coalition government will have the support of 120 MLAs, which is more than enough to end the suspense and put a fullstop to any further speculation.
When Vijay’s TVK fell short of the majority after the election results were out by Monday evening, several political negotiations took place and at one point of time, an unlikely alliance between DMK and AIADMK also came into the picture. There were also reports that AIADMK was willing to support Vijay. But, none of the combinations really materialized as speculated in the media.
It is now clear that all small parties and INC are finally going with TVK and Vijay taking oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is just a mere formality once Governor accepts the claim, considering that there are no more further surprises in this political thriller.
Though Vijay’s TVK has managed to cross the magic number just by a slender margin, it seems like his government will not face any trouble in the near future because political circles are buzzing that some of the winning MLAs from AIADMK are still in consultations to come out of their party and extend support to the new dispensation.
Once Vijay forms the government, there is every possibility that some of the MLAs from other parties will definitely think of shifting loyalties and joining TVK, which is quite a routine manoeuvring in politics. So, if this happens, Vijay’s strength will be bigger in the assembly and chances to destabilize his government will gradually lessen.
So, in all probability, there will be no immediate trouble for TVK as Vijay will have every chance to consolidate his strength once he sits in the coveted chair as CM.
Meanwhile, there are reports that Tamil Nadu governor is leaving for Kerala today night. He has given appointment and the high stakes meeting is likely to take place shortly which could decide the future developments.
