Watch: Many Whys & Hows Addressed By Irumudi Director

Despite turning into a sensational blockbuster, Irumudi had its share of questions, especially around the writing and certain key decisions in the second half. With the film now arriving on OTT and finding a fresh audience, Gulte Pro’s Ram Venkat Srikar sat down with director Siva Nirvana for an interesting conversation about the film’s writing, characters and screenplay.

Siva revealed that the idea of exploring a man’s life before and during his 41 day Ayyappa Mala journey was the starting point. He felt the contrast could naturally create drama while also allowing him to present Trinadh as a flawed and vulnerable character played by Mass Maharaja Raviteja. The director also wanted the Ayyappa backdrop to give Irumudi a distinct identity instead of telling the same thrilling story in a regular setting.

One of the biggest writing choices was making Trinadh powerless throughout the story. Unlike a conventional commercial hero who knows everything and solves every problem, Trinadh keeps discovering things much later. Siva said this was a deliberate attempt to make the protagonist surrender to situations and explore what happens when a mass hero cannot control events around him.

The biggest risk was the death of daughter character Manikanta ( Manemma ). Siva acknowledged that audiences generally struggle to accept the death of a young child, particularly when the protagonist is expected to protect her. However, he believed the screenplay had to make that tragedy convincing rather than simply emotional. The director explained how several seemingly simple scenes in the first half were actually designed as payoffs after Mani’s death.

Siva also explained the much discussed character of Guruswamy played by Saikumar. He revealed that the actor was specifically asked to keep his reactions extremely restrained. Since Guruswamy alone knew what had happened, his performance had to carry guilt without making the character suspicious. According to Siva, Saikumar’s ability to maintain that emotional balance became one of the film’s biggest strengths.

Interestingly, Siva revealed that he wrote Irumudi backwards from the climactic confrontation between the two fathers. His basic idea revolved around two completely different parenting philosophies eventually reaching a point where one man kills the other’s daughter and is subsequently killed himself. From that destination, the entire screenplay was developed with the intention of making the characters and their decisions emotionally convincing.

The director also made it clear that Irumudi was never intended to be a conventional devotional film or a straightforward family drama. He wanted to combine a commercial hero, an intense family story and a crime thriller structure while keeping the emotional core intact. The OTT conversation with Ram Venkat gave Siva an opportunity to address several of the questions that followed the film’s theatrical release.
