USA: Why So Much Hate Toward Indian Women?

A simple fun reel made by a group of Indian women has taken a different turn after it was reshared on social media with a negative narrative.

The women were seen standing outside their homes and making a funny video about how people maintained social distance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The video was apparently made only for fun and dates back to the COVID period.

However, after the video was reshared on X (formerly Twitter), some users presented it in a completely different way. The post attracted negative comments, with several people criticising the way the video was being portrayed.

Some netizens came to the women’s defence and pointed out the context behind the video.

“Stop this nonsense, it’s the video from covid times, they are maintaining social distance and made this video for fun. What’s wrong with that?” one user commented.

Another user wrote, “Rubbish…the women are just standing outside their houses…grow up.”

The whole incident also highlights how easily an old or harmless social media post can be taken out of context. Once such content is shared with a negative narrative, people may start judging the individuals in the video or even generalise about women wearing sarees or the Indian community.

Social media gives everyone the freedom to create and share content. But the same freedom also comes with responsibility.

People may make reels simply for fun, but users should be careful about how they present or reshare such content. A harmless video can quickly acquire a completely different meaning when it is shared with misleading context or unnecessary negativity.

Fun and humour are part of social media. But insulting women, spreading negativity or making disrespectful comments about a community is never acceptable.
