Tollywood: Remakes That Failed In 2023

Tollywood faced challenges this year as several remakes stories failed to make a mark in Telugu cinema. Mega Brothers Chiranjeevi and Pawan Kalyan, in particular, experienced setbacks with unsuccessful remake ventures.

Despite Pawan Kalyan completing the shooting of the film “Bro” in just 20 days, it failed to connect with the audience, leaving Pawan Kalyan’s image in a questionable state.

“Bro” faced criticism for unnecessary changes to the original story by Trivikram, leading to emotional disconnection and financial losses. Political disputes surrounding Pawan Kalyan further added to the challenges. The film was directed by Samuthirakhani.

Megastar Chiranjeevi and Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja, with a mixed bag of results in 2023, experienced success with “Waltair Veeraya,” a blockbuster hit.

But, for Ravi Teja, “Ravanasura,” a remake of the Bengali thriller “Vinci Da,” failed to generate substantial revenue. The situation is almost the same for Chiranjeevi, who faced a significant setback with the movie “Bhola Shankar,” directed by Mehr Ramesh. This official remake of Vedalam (2015) disappointed Chiranjeevi’s fans, who had advised against remaking it. The film, featuring Tamannaah and Keerthy Suresh, failed to live up to expectations and led Chiranjeevi to reconsider his approach to remakes. Subsequently, a lined-up Malayalam remake was sidelined, and the remakes released in 2023 faced a similar fate of disappointment.

Director Krishnavamshi’s Telugu adaptation of the Marathi hit “Natasamrat” titled “Rangamarthanda,” featuring Prakash Raj and Ramya Krishna, received positive reviews but did not fare well commercially.

On the whole, in terms of remakes, Tollywood struggled big in 2023.
