Republic Sequel On Cards, Deva Katta Has A Big Challenge!

Sequel and franchise films are the order of the day in Tollywood. Though the formula of narrating one big story in parts or making sequels after the first film turns out to be a huge hit is not new to Tollywood, the trend has garnered renewed interest in recent years after the success of films like Baahubali 2 and Pushpa 2.

Now, there are numerous sequel films in the making in Tollywood because all category of actors are encouraging directors to come up with stories that can be transformed into franchise films. Joining the bandwagon is Mega hero Sai Durgha Tej who has just revealed that he is keen to star in the sequel of his acclaimed social drama ‘Republic’. 

In his latest media interaction, Sai Durgha Tej, who will be next seen in Sambarala Yeti Gattu, stated that director Dev Katta is currently working on a story for the sequel to Republic, a gripping and thought provoking socio political drama which released in 2021 and won critical acclaim though it failed to secure commercial success at the box office. Dev Katta’s honest attempt to highlight the inefficiencies in the system received widespread appreciation.  

SDT said that Republic is one film which he feels to make as a franchise because the idea is relevant to the today’s times and has the potential to pique the interest of moviegoers. He also revealed that Dev Katta is not in a hurry but wants to come up with a strong point for the sequel to develop a full length script before taking it to the sets. 

While this unexpected announcement by Sai Durgha Tej might create a sort of excitement among a section of audience who liked the film, but the idea to bring a sequel to a commercially failed film is fraught with big risk because practically it will be very difficult to generate anticipation among moviegoers after so many years since the release of the first part. 

Even sequels for films with decent success box office are failing to create the required buzz due to lack of interest in audience. For Republic 2, it will be a risky proposition for sure as the first part failed to match the expectations. As Dev Katta is known for his intense storytelling and impactful characters, he will need to come up with a better script and solid execution this time if he wants to score a commercial success with the sequel.
