The controversy surrounding actor Shivaji’s remarks at the Dhandoraa pre release event continues to create strong reactions. His comments on women’s dressing sense drew widespread criticism. The Women’s Commission also issued a notice to Shivaji over the matter. Several women directors, producers and actors from the film industry wrote to their associations condemning his statements. Many celebrities expressed their displeasure on social media, keeping the issue in the spotlight.
During today’s press meet, Shivaji apologised for the words he used and expressed regret over the discomfort caused by his comments. However, while clarifying his stand, he referred to the Lulu Mall incident involving actress Nidhhi Agerwal. He stated that if anything had gone wrong with her dress during the incident, the video would have remained on the internet forever, which could have caused major embarrassment and trouble for Nidhhi. He said this concern led him to make such comments.
In reality, Nidhhi Agerwal was the victim in that incident, as she faced severe trouble due to unexpected crowd pressure from fans. Bringing up a hypothetical situation about her clothing has not gone down well with many, who feel it once again places the blame on the victim.
Reacting indirectly on Instagram, Nidhhi Agerwal posted a status suggesting that blaming victims is unfair and misleading. Though she did not name anyone, the message was widely seen as a response to Shivaji’s comments.
Earlier, Nidhhi had chosen not to file a case related to the Lulu Mall incident and wanted the issue to settle quietly. However, Shivaji’s latest explanation has once again turned the matter into a hot topic on social media.
While the impact on Dhandoraa promotions remains to be seen, the controversy shows no signs of dying down anytime soon.
