Radhika’s latest film Thaai Kizhavi has turned out to be a surprising box-office winner, registering a solid worldwide gross of ₹20 crores till now. At a time when many films are struggling to pull audiences into theatres despite aggressive and often senseless promotional campaigns, this content-driven drama has managed to create an impact largely on its own merit.
Out of the total collections, the film earned ₹15 crores in India, while the overseas market contributed ₹5 crores, taking the global tally close to ₹20 crores. These numbers are impressive, especially considering the modest expectations around the film prior to its release.
Without excessive hype or over-the-top marketing strategies, ThaaiKizhavi has proved that strong storytelling and emotional depth can still draw audiences to cinemas. The film may have a few flaws, but Tamil audiences reportedly connected deeply with its emotional core and rooted narrative.
Veteran actress Radhika Sarathkumar once again demonstrated her acting prowess, carrying the film almost single-handedly on her shoulders. Her performance has been widely appreciated, with many praising her for choosing a role that highlights substance over glamour.
The success of Thaai Kizhavi sends out a clear message to the industry, content truly matters. If similar audience-driven support emerges in Tollywood for meaningful cinema, such films can replicate this success there as well.
This doesn’t mean Tollywood isn’t making content-driven films, it certainly is. However, in recent times, many projects seem more social media or meme driven than story driven. Perhaps it’s time to refocus on rich, emotionally strong narratives, with new-age filmmakers smartly utilizing senior actors and their powerful screen presence in meaningful roles.
