Does MS Subbulakshmi’s Biopic Have Enough Drama?

Legendary Singer MS Subbulakshmi’s Biopic is formally announced with Rashmika in the lead role. The movie bankrolled by Rockline Venkatesh, Allu Aravind, and Bunny Vas will have its Pooja tomorrow in Chennai.

Mahanati has set a benchmark in how Biopics should be made. The Drama in the Central Role and the Performance of the Protagonist are the key for the success of a Biopic.

Everyone is waiting to see if Rashmika will fit in the role which should be calm and serene.

As far as the Drama in the Biopic is concerned, there are loads in MS Subbulakshmi’s life.

She is born in the Orthodox Devadasi family in Tamil Nadu. In those days, Devadasis lives would be very miserable. Moreover, Carnatic music was an impenetrable bastion of Upper Caste Males. She escaped from her home breaking all the shackles. 

She got married to T Sadasivan, a freedom fighter and Publicist. The relationship helped her gain global recognition but it is also complicated as Sadasivan yet held absolute control over her career, finances, and public image.

Despite raising tens of crores for temples, hospitals, and charities throughout her career, she kept practically nothing for herself. 

In their twilight years, financial setbacks forced the couple to sell their sprawling estate and move into a humble, rented house in Kotturpuram, Chennai, living on quiet modesty and royalty stipends. 

When her husband, T. Sadasivam, passed away in 1997 after nearly six decades together, the loss shattered her. She took a permanent step back from public life, never performed a concert again, and let the voice that enthralled the world fall completely silent.  

She spent her last years immersed in prayer and meditation. In December 2004, following a bout of broncho-pneumonia and cardiac complications, she passed away peacefully at the age of 88, bidding adieu not as a glamorous celebrity, but as an austere, saintly recluse.
