A small Marathi film has suddenly become one of the most talked about Indian films after Gondhal was selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2027. The film had a modest theatrical run but gained attention through its festival journey and is now getting a much bigger spotlight.
Directed by Santosh Davakhar, Gondhal is set in rural Maharashtra and takes place over a single night. The story revolves around a newly married couple and a traditional Maharashtrian ritual. The film explores village life, relationships, emotions and local traditions.
Ishita Deshmukh, Yogesh Sohoni and Kishor Kadam are among the lead actors. The film has also received recognition at major festivals. Davakhar won the Silver Peacock for Best Director at the International Film Festival of India.
Gondhal becomes only the fourth Marathi film to be selected as India’s official Oscar entry. The film will now enter the Academy’s selection process for the Best International Feature Film category. However, being chosen as India’s entry does not guarantee a place in the final Oscar nominations.
