Very few films remind you why the big screen experience matters. Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana is one such attempt, presenting the epic on a scale that deserves to be experienced in theatres.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film brings the timeless epic to life with Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash and the rest of the cast putting in sincere performances. The visual ambition is evident throughout, with several frames capturing the grandeur of the world being created.
As Part 1, the film remains fairly engaging despite revisiting a story that audiences have grown up listening to and knowing. However, with only half the epic covered and one of its most beloved characters, Hanuman, yet to make an appearance, the narrative naturally feels incomplete.
The film has its share of shortcomings, particularly in storytelling and pacing. Certain stretches could have been more compelling, and the emotional impact does not always match the scale of the visuals.
The music by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer takes a subtle, slow-burn approach rather than going for the loud, thumping background scores traditionally seen in Indian epic films.
Sai Pallavi’s casting as Sita may not work for everyone, as her portrayal doesn’t quite capture the grace and screen presence one would expect from a character of such stature. While her performance is sincere, the casting feels less convincing in the context of the epic.
Despite these limitations, RAMAYANA deserves appreciation for its ambition and the effort to bring an epic of this magnitude to the big screen. IT IS AN EXPERIENCE WORTH WATCHING IN THEATRES, PREFERABLY IN THE BEST AVAILABLE PREMIUM FORMAT, even if the storytelling leaves room for improvement.
