YSRCP Falls to 4th, Below BJP in AP Municipal Polls

In what could be a bigger and shocking defeat than the 2024 Assembly elections, YS Jagan-led YSRCP suffered a rude shock in the municipal polls. The beleaguered YSRCP ended up as fourth falling behind the BJP in terms of the municipal wins.

The local body polls results mark a significant decline for the party compared to the 2021 local body elections, when it was in power. The latest results also indicate that the party’s performance has fallen below its showing in the 2024 Assembly elections.

According to the results, the TDP-Janasena-BJP combine secured 81 of the 86 municipalities, accounting for a 94.2% strike rate. The NDA also won 12 municipal corporations.

While the TDP won 61 municipalities, Janasena secured 16 and the BJP won four. Whereas the YSRCP managed to win just three municipalities, placing it behind the BJP. Two municipalities went to others.

In terms of wards, the TDP won 1,983, Janasena secured 363 and the BJP bagged 115. The three parties together won 2,461 wards. The YSRCP managed to win 416 wards, while other parties secured 99.

The TDP-Janasena-BJP also captured 12 of the 13 municipal corporations, leaving the YSRCP with just one corporation.

The results represent a major political setback for Jagan & his party. In the 2021 municipal elections, the YSRCP was in power while the main opposition TDP had boycotted the polls. Despite the TDP staying away from the contest, the YSRCP had secured victories in around 80% of the municipalities.

However, the situation has completely changed, with the YSRCP now struggling to retain its political ground in the local body elections. Its performance has also raised questions about the party’s organisational strength at the grassroots level.

Overall, it is one of the worst performances of YSRCP and this election result also stood as a referendum to Jagan’s MAVIGUN call for the capital.
