Let Us Celebrate Sankranti in a Better Way

Sankranti is one of the most vibrant and joyful festivals, especially in the Godavari districts, where celebrations are filled with energy and enthusiasm. Traditional fairs, cultural programs, and community gatherings give the festival its unique charm. However, in recent years, there has been growing criticism over the way some Sankranti events are being conducted.

Under the name of recording dances, indecent and vulgar performances are being organised in several places. What was once meant to be entertainment has slowly turned into something that many find uncomfortable and unacceptable. Such acts are drawing strong reactions from the public and raising serious questions about where these celebrations are heading.

Incidents during this year’s Sankranti programs have once again highlighted the issue. Certain actions on public stages and demands made during dance shows crossed limits and sparked widespread debate. Many feel that asking women to perform in an obscene manner is deeply disrespectful and shameful. The loud cheering and encouragement from sections of the crowd have made the situation even more disturbing.

It is true that recording dances during Sankranti have been happening in rural areas for many years, and many argue that enjoying a few days of fun is not wrong. But times have changed. Along with time, the mindset of those organising and attending such events must also change. Obscene and vulgar programs are slowly damaging the cultural value and dignity of the Sankranti festival.

For the younger generation, especially Gen Z, Sankranti should remind them of Bhogi bonfires, colourful rangolis, gobbemmalu, kites flying high in the sky, and Haridasu songs. The festival should stand for tradition, togetherness, and joy, not half dressed dance shows or extreme forms of gambling.

Change may not happen overnight. But if organisers gradually stop promoting such indecent programs, the unhealthy culture surrounding some Sankranti celebrations can slowly fade away. Celebrating Sankranti in a better and more respectful way will help preserve its true spirit for future generations.
