Indian Doctoral Student Shot Dead In Canada

Another day and another Indian student falls prey to merciless shooting abroad. As per the latest reports, a 20-year-old Indian student was shot dead near the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Campus in Canada and the hunt for arresting the accused is currently on with the police issuing a lookout notice to seek public intervention. 

Shivank Avasthi, a doctoral student, was found with a gunshot wound on Tuesday at about 03:34 PM. Responding immediately on an emergency call, police officers quickly reached the spot only to find that Shivank breathed his last even before any medical assistance. This was Toronto’s 41st homicide case this year as per official records. 

The suspect behind this heinous firing reportedly fled the scene of offense before the arrival of police teams. This is the second shooting incident involving Indians. A few days ago, Indian origin woman named Himanshi Khurana was found murdered in her apartment in Toronto. 

The Indian consulate in Toronto confirmed the news through a post on X, “We express deep anguish over the tragic death of a young Indian doctoral student, Mr Shivank Avasthi, in a fatal shooting incident near the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus,” the Consulate said in a statement posted on X. “The Consulate is in touch with the bereaved family during this difficult time, and is extending all necessary assistance in close coordination with the local authorities.”
