Snowstorm Triggers Mass Flight Cancellations in US

The US is bracing for a weather emergency following heavy snow and freezing rain caused induced by massive winter storm. The weather department predicted extremely dangerous conditions due to the abnormally chilling conditions in the coming days.

Extremely cool wind currents from the Rocky Mountains are heading towards the East, making the winter more harsh for the public in several states.

On Saturday, more than 3,200 flights have been cancelled due to the inclement weather. According to flight tracking website, FlightAware, another 4,800 flights scheduled on Sunday have also been cancelled.

In the wake of the cold conditions, Air India cancelled several flights. In a travel advisory issued by the airline, the passengers were informed that it had cancelled all its flights from New York and Newark on January 25 and 26.

Air India suggested that the passengers check the status of their flights and make alternative arrangements as heavy snowfall is likely to predicted in New York, New Jersey and adjoining areas from early Sunday morning.

Nearly two-thirds of the eastern part of the US is likely to be affected by the heavy snowfall and extremely low temperatures due to the chilly weather.

It is predicted that in Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee snow could accumulate up to an inch that could affect trees, power lines and roads.

Officials have been alerted to take necessary steps to tackle power outage and disruption of normal life.
