Hyderabadi Woman Back Home After Dubai Legal Battle

Ameena Begum, belonging to Hyderabad, has returned home after a prolonged legal battle in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In 2025, she was arrested for a drug-related case and sentenced to 25 years in prison. The case highlights the need to beware of fake recruitment agents.

On Tuesday, her family members received her at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and her reunion with her minor son turned emotional, as she remained separated from him for several moths.

On May 18, 2025, Ameena had travelled to Dubai after being promised of a job there by a travel agent. However, her dream of a job was shattered as she was taken into custody soon after landing in the airport, following allegations that she carried contraband in her bag.

Ameena was shocked to find the prohibited substance in her bag. In her legal appeal in Dubai, Ameena said she was unaware of the contents in her bag but the court rejected her argument and she was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Later, her legal team initiated measures for a second appeal in Abu Dhabi and also a mercy petition on the grounds that she has a minor son, elderly parents and was suffering from Tuberculosis. However, there are no full-fledged details about her legal battle yet, and more information is expected to emerge in the coming days as she has now returned home.

On her return, Ameena thanked Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan who played a key role in providing legal and financial support to her. Reportedly, Dirham 25,000 was raised through crowdfunding to hire legal representation in Dubai.
