For many years now, the United States authorities had been cracking down on the call centres and scam operations from countries like India and Bangladesh which have been looting the elderly population in the U.S.
Now something pretty significant has happened as the FBI has announced that they have shut down call centre operation in India.
According to the official social media statement delivered by the FBI itself, they have shut down a call center operation in India that defrauded hundreds of elderly victims in the U.S.
This scam operation from an Indian call centre looted millions of dollars through tech support scams and two senior executives who operated a business that enabled it, have just admitted to turning a blind eye to this widespread fraud.
This comes after an FBI Boston investigation that has resulted in the arrests and convictions of a former employee of their call routing company, and five India-based telemarketing fraudsters.
As confirmed by the FBI, the CEO and CSO of this operation, by their own admission, they willfully profited from telemarketing and tech support scammers as they preyed on the elderly, exploited the vulnerable, and drained victims of their life savings and peace of mind.
Behind every fraudulent call was a real person left frightened, humiliated, or financially shattered.
Tech support scams cost Americans $2.1 billion last year, and Rhode Islanders reported losing at least $5.7 million.
The fact that the FBI took matters into own hands and shut down a call centre operation here in India is a matter of concern. The operational procedures of the local police and law enforcement authorities are coming under question now.
