Texas Hanuman Statue Becomes A Political Flashpoint

At a time when racist attacks and hate campaigns are mounting on Indians in the USA, even Hindu gods are not spared. Now, a Hanuman statue in Texas has become the reason for another big controversy and that too ahead of the midterm elections.

Going into the details, a major political debate erupted recently in Texas over a massive 90-foot Lord Hanuman statue located at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land. The monument called the Statue of Union is currently the third tallest statue in United States. This was built in 2024.

The controversy started after conservative YouTuber and MAGA activist Jesse Hughes posted a photo of the towering statue on social media platform X and vowed to tear down the statue if his side wins the midterms. Other far right activists supported his statement claiming that Hindu religious idols do not belong in America.

The removal threat triggered a strong backlash from the Indian American community and religious freedom supporters across the country. Many NRIs and even Americans also came in support against the remarks. They have condemned the intentions of these activists.

Some radical groups protested outside temple grounds calling the Hindu deity a false god. However temple authorities maintained that the structure represents peace and serves local worshipper communities.

But, many have pointed out that Indian Hindus have been an integral part of the American community and also contributed to the economy by paying taxes.

Texas holds a very large Indian American population making up over 1.8 percent of state residents. Community organizations like Coalition of Hindus of North America stepped forward to defend the temple against religious hate.

As US midterm elections approach, political experts say anti-immigrant and religious rhetoric is increasing in campaign speeches. Hindu groups requested local police and state leaders to provide security for temple grounds.
