Last week, the political arena in Andhra Pradesh witnessed a heated exchange between Jana Sena and the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YCP) concerning the volunteer system. Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan accused the volunteer system of leading to human trafficking and the disappearance of numerous women in the past four years. The YCP government refuted these claims and encouraged volunteers to protest against Pawan Kalyan.
Amidst the debate surrounding the volunteer system’s benefits, Jayaprakash Narayan from Lok Satta shared his opinion, labeling the system as ineffective. He expressed concern that around 25 lakh people in Andhra Pradesh are pushed into poverty each year.
While he acknowledged the government’s responsibility to provide basic necessities and welfare, Jayaprakash Narayan criticized the reliance on a volunteer system for delivering rations to doorsteps. He believed that such a system lacks purpose and asserted that the government should focus on uplifting people’s self-respect and empowering them to stand on their own feet.
Jayaprakash Narayan argued that the state government should invest in essential systems, especially in critical sectors like healthcare, to improve the well-being of the public. He noted that the healthcare sector is a matter of concern across the country, including Andhra Pradesh, and contributes to the increasing number of people falling into poverty each year.
