It is no secret that the calculatingly elongated Padayatra done by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy propelled him to power in the 2019 election. This Praja Sankalpa Yatra led Jagan’s YCP to a historic win with 151 MLAs on its side. But in a span of just five years, Jagan lost all good will of the public as his YCP has been restricted to a bare minimum of 11 MLA seats in this year’s election.
Jagan is clearly stressed about the result but he tried to re-energize his cadres by saying his party will be back. He expressed confidence in YCP regaining power in 2029. Along with that, Jagan dropped a hint about doing another Padayatra.
“I did a padayatra for 14 long months and it taught me a lot. I still have the age on my side and I will fight hard along with your support” Jagan said as he indirectly hinted about going back into the public through the Padayatra.
If Jagan really does go into the public with another Padayatra then things could be completely different this time. Prior to 2019, people didn’t know Jagan’s way of operations and this is where “Okka chance” sentiment worked in his favor. But after the 2024 mandate, Jagan’s five-year tenure has set a precedent and it was clearly turned down by the public, considering the 11 seats YCP got. But nevertheless, Jagan has a mass face value, so we should see how he can steer his Padayatra this time.
