Not Soil & Water – What Is Modi Bringing to Amaravati This Time?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Amaravati on May 2 to officially launch the capital city’s redevelopment works. His tour schedule has already been confirmed, and preparations for the grand event are happening at a fast pace.

While everything seems to be going smoothly, there’s growing curiosity about what exactly Modi is bringing to Amaravati this time. Many are wondering whether he will finally bring full support from the Centre to the state’s capital.

Back in 2017, it was Narendra Modi himself, in his role as Prime Minister, who laid the foundation for Amaravati. People hoped that he would announce a big financial package for the capital city, especially since Andhra Pradesh was a state without a proper capital. Modi even brought soil from sacred places and water from holy rivers to Amaravati for the foundation event. But despite the grand gestures, he didn’t announce any financial support from the Centre at that time. Even though TDP was part of the NDA back then, Amaravati didn’t receive much help from the central government.

But now, things are different. The political situation after the 2024 elections is not the same as it was in 2014. Back then, BJP had a clear majority on its own. But in 2024, BJP needs the support of allies like TDP and JD(U) to form the government. Because of this, the Centre is now giving much more importance to Andhra Pradesh and its needs.

This time, NDA has secured a hat-trick win, and with that, Amaravati is also getting a new level of support. The Centre has backed the city not just with words, but with actions. It has guaranteed loans from the World Bank and HUDCO to help fund Amaravati’s construction.

On top of that, the Centre has already approved many of the proposals made by CM Chandrababu Naidu—such as a new railway line, an outer ring road, and national highways connecting the city. There’s now a growing belief that whatever Babu asks for Amaravati, Modi will say yes.

Given all this, there is strong buzz that Modi may announce a massive package for Amaravati during the launch event. Experts believe that once this package is announced, Amaravati will no longer face any shortage of funds, and the entire look and feel of the capital city will be transformed.
