In a surprise political move, the opposition INDIA bloc has named former Supreme Court judge Justice B. Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election. This bold move by INDIA- bloc now sparks for a new political fight down south with the NDA bloc proposing CP Radhakrishnan, a Tamalian as its candidate resulting in a Tamil vs Telugu fight for the Vice President position.
Justice Sudershan Reddy, a respected jurist from Telangana, served on the Supreme Court bench between 2005 and 2011. Known for his sharp legal mind and pro-people judgments, he hails from Madgul in the present-day Ranga Reddy district. His candidature signals the bloc’s strategy to consolidate support from the Telugu states MPs , where it could even lead to keeping Chandrababu Naidu and TDP in tough position with whom to choose as TDP stands for regional Telugu pride and identity.
On the other hand with the NDA declaration, an influential Tamil political veteran turned the election into more than just a political battle. The contest is shaping up into a symbolic Southern showdown; a Tamil stalwart versus a Telugu Judge, with both camps hoping to draw on language pride and cultural identity.
While the Vice-President’s post is largely regarded as ceremonial, the election carries wider political implications. For the INDIA bloc, projecting Justice Reddy reflects an attempt to strengthen its Southern footprint, especially in states where the BJP has struggled to make inroads. For the NDA, backing a Tamil leader underlines its ambition to hold sway over Tamil Nadu, a state where opposition forces like DMK and AIADMK remain strong while elections are around the corner.
With the MPs set to cast their votes soon, the contest is being closely watched not just for its outcome, but also for the narratives it will shape in the South. It is noted as a political opportunity, “This Vice-Presidential election is no longer about Delhi alone, it’s about who speaks for the South.”
