The much talked about Hosur – Bangalore metro rail project now seems to have come to standstill as the BMRCL feels that it is technically not feasible to connect with the Hosur metro rail as it follows the Chennai model of metro track system which is not followed by Bengaluru metro. Instead of waiting for Karnataka’s approval now, Tamil Nadu can think smarter and look for Chennai–Sri City metro line. This idea not only makes practical sense but also fits perfectly with Andhra Pradesh’s new industrial vision under Chandra Babu Naidu.
Sri City, situated in Tada on the Andhra–Tamil Nadu border, just 50 km from Chennai, is far more than a regular Special Economic Zone (SEZ). In just 15 years, it has transformed into a much larger ecosystem developing a city-like structure that hosts top educational institutions, hospitals, schools, and residential spaces that are all within a well-planned environment.
Now, Sri City is entering its next phase of growth, focusing on the commercial sector with a plan to expand to another 200 acres that would not just get industries but impressive high rise buildings, hotels and other allied sectors. Along NH-16, rapid urbanization is already visible all the way up to Naidupeta.
Not just Sri City, the areas around Sri City along the NH-16 that hosts Vijayawada – Chennai Industrial Corridor also have seen rapid urbanization and industrialization over the last few years with Naidupeta SEZ and Mambattu SEZ already being successful in these areas. With the Krishnapatnam and Chennai port at bay, not just connectivity but also shall support these in providing better logistical capability of these industries around for exports and imports. .
A metro line or Rapid Rail Transit system ( RRTS ) connecting Chennai’s Madhavaram or Redhills to Sri City would perfectly complement this growth and is a perfect golden opportunity waiting to be utilised. It would connect the people to move from Chennai to Sri-city and vice versa in quick no time of just 45 minutes and reduce the time and improve work efficiency with greater productivity.
Importantly, this project could also align with CBN’s Industrial Policy 4.0, which targets ₹30 lakh crore in investments and prioritizes infrastructure-led growth and the “Speed of Doing Business.” With Andhra expanding Sri City by another 2,000 acres, a Chennai–Sri City metro would provide the much-needed mobility link for this industrial corridor and help to establish Nellore and Chittoor as strong centers for industrial investments for Aerospace and defence sectors.
This couldn’t be the first time that Tamil Nadu has worked with Andhra, back then in 1980’s Telugu Ganga project was commissioned by NTR and MGR which provided water supply to Chennai and in addition irrigated the dry areas of Prakasam and Nellore districts. In current times, this metro line could be the new Telugu Ganga Project for TN and Andhra by taking the lead on the Chennai–Sri City metro, it can showcase how two states can collaborate for shared development and progress that shall benefit the whole nation in the long term.
