Centre Gives 3 Day Deadline For META, Seeks Mark’s Apology

The Central Government has taken a tough stand against Meta after the temporary removal of PM Narendra Modi’s video from Facebook. A Parliamentary Standing Committee has reportedly given the company three days to respond and has asked Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to issue a personal apology over the incident.

The issue began after a video of Modi was briefly removed from Facebook. Meta later restored the video, saying it was taken down by mistake and expressed regret over the incident. However, members of the Parliamentary Committee said the explanation was not enough.

The committee, headed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, has reportedly asked Zuckerberg to apologise within three days. It also demanded that Meta identify those responsible for the mistake and explain how it happened.

During the meeting, lawmakers also raised concerns about how social media platforms moderate content. They questioned why important public content was removed while many objectionable posts remain available on these platforms. Representatives from Meta, Google, X and other technology companies attended the discussion.

The committee also warned that if Meta fails to respond properly, the government could examine its safe harbour protection under India’s IT Act. This legal protection shields social media companies from liability for content posted by users, provided they follow Indian laws.

Meta has not yet announced whether Mark Zuckerberg will personally apologise. The issue is expected to remain under the government’s watch as discussions on digital platform accountability continue.
