Justice NV Ramana: Eenadu Journalist To 48th Chief Justice Of India

Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana aka NV Ramana was sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of India (CJI) today at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. He succeeded the post after Justice SA Bobde. NV Ramana took the oath at a brief ceremony held on Saturday. President Ram Nath Kovind has administered the oath. Justice Ramana took the oath in English in the name of the God.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Ravi Shankar Prasad and other Cabinet Ministers have participated in the oath taking ceremony. 

NV Ramana hails from Andhra Pradesh. Born on August 27, 1957 in Ponnavaram village of Krishna district, Ramana was born into an agricultural family. His father was a farmer. An avid reader and literature enthusiast, Ramana had worked as a journalist for two years from 1970 to 1980 reporting on political and legal matters for the Eenadu newspaper. He is a first-generation lawyer and passionate about Carnatic music.

Ramana has a tenure of 16 months. He will retire on August 26, 2022. Outgoing CJI SA Bobde has recommended NV Ramana as the CJI.
