The Rajya Sabha has passed a bill extending legal protection to Vande Mataram. The proposed amendments to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, make insulting or disrupting the national song a punishable offence, placing it on par with the legal safeguards enjoyed by the national anthem.
