The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suffered massive financial losses due to the Champions Trophy. PCB secured the opportunity to host an ICC tournament for the first time in 29 years. They spent Rs. 503 crore (in Indian currency) to upgrade stadiums and an additional Rs. 347 crore was spent on organizing the event.
However, the PCB received only Rs. 52 crore from the ICC through hospitality fees, ticket sales, and sponsorships.
Despite being the host nation, Pakistan played only one match home, which they lost to New Zealand. The match against India was played in Dubai. Another game against Bangladesh in Pakistan was canceled due to rain. As a result, the PCB has suffered a staggering total loss of Rs. 737 crore.
The PCB has introduced damage control measures to recover from these financial setbacks. Reports suggest that the match fee for players participating in the National T20 Championship has been drastically reduced from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 10,000 without prior notice.
Furthermore, players have been instructed to stay in economy hotels instead of luxury accommodations. However, a PCB official stated that, following Chairman Naqvi’s directives, the match fee may be adjusted to Rs. 30,000.
