Barring an occasional season or two, Punjab Kings have been one of the most insignificant teams in the IPL. Despite being in the league for 17 years rarely they have shown the fight and vigour to win the trophy.
But for the first time in recent years, Punjab showed real character and determination to win the trophy, and this happened under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer. This talented young batsmen was absolutely brilliant for the Punjab franchise and validated the heavy price they paid for him.
Right from the opening game of the tournament, Shreyas was absolutely brilliant with his batting performances and also captaincy choices.
Punjab went from being a disorganised and uncharacteristic team to a disciplined and well oiled machine kind of a team. At the heart of it, the consistency of Shreyas Iyer and the kind of respect that he commanded internally in the team was clearly evident.
Punjab finished in the ninth position on the table in the 2024 season and this time around, they were at the very top of the table, number one position and even entered the play-offs. The best part about this is that Punjab did not make it this far out of fluke either. They were consistently good with the bat and ball with an effective leader in the form of Shreyas Iyer at the helm.
He had already taken Delhi and Punjab to the play-offs in the previous seasons and he worked miraculously well with Punjab this year as he took a lackluster team almost all the way. He led them from the front and had a lasting impact on the side.
