The Indian cricket team is undergoing a transition period as legendary superstar, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli are slowly moving away from the mainstream scheme of things. They have already retired from the T20 and test format, and the upcoming 50 overs World Cup could be their final major appearance.
In this context, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of the Indian test and ODI team, and it needs to be said that his captaincy has gotten off to a rough start.
India had already lost New Zealand test series at home with a shocking 3-0 margin. However, this was quickly covered up by a big performance in the T20 World Cup, which India ended up winning comfortably.
But things are back to square one now as India is against struggling big time against the Australia in the ongoing ODI series. Things are not looking positive for the Indian ODI team and captain Shubman Gill himself is struggling for form.
India lost both the ODI games, and the final game on Sunday is going to be just a consolation. Considering the current form, it must be a tough challenge for India to overcome this Australian site in home conditions.
Kohli has registered back-to-back ducks while Rohit returned to form with a brilliant 70 in the second ODI. But the crucial factor here is that the team must move on from both Virat and Rohit, which is clearly not the case till now.
Gill will not just have to improve his own form with the bat, but also nourish the entire team and lead from the front. The team management picked Gill over Shreyas Iyer, which was a bold choice, and it is now the responsibility of the youngster to live up to the same.
