The Supreme Court of India has adjourned hearing of the petition which was lodged to change name of the country from India to ‘Bharat.’ However the Supreme Court did not cite any date for hearing this petition.
The main reason behind to adjourne the petition is Chief Justice of India SA Bobde was on leave. The PIL was filed by an individual named Namah and speaking to a news agency, he said, “There are different names on different documents provided by the government of India. The Aadhar card says ‘Bharat Sarkar’ while driving license says ‘Union of India’ and ‘Republic of India’ on passports. This is creating confusion and there should be uniformity and one should know the name of the nation. This is the time for unity.”
This is not for the first time such petitions are filed on changing the nation’s name. In March 2016, the Supreme Court had dismissed one such petition. Then bench of Justices TS Thakur and UU Lalit countered the petitioner’s arguments not to play with emotions of the country people.
The current petitioner said, the change in name will instill a sense of pride in our nationality and it will also justify the hard-fought freedom by our freedom fighters.
