After Selling Just 106 Units, Harley Davidson To Exit India

One of the popular names when it comes to motorcycles is none other than USA based Harley Davidson. Many Telugu heroes have once imported these bikes and used them in their movies as well as in real life. And a couple of years ago, the bike company launched an assembling unit in India, along with showrooms across all the major Indian cities.

And during the recent Covid-19 pandemic, the company suffered huge losses in India and also found out through expert surveys that it is going to be quite tough for them in the next couples. While Harley Davidson sold almost 2,500 bikes in India and exported another 2,100 bikes to nearby countries from here, it sold a mere 106 units in the period of April-June. If compared with global numbers, last year Harley Davidson sold more than 2 lakh units across the world. That has pushed the company into reorganising its strategy and cutting some non-performing assets.

Reports are doing rounds that they will be giving their assembly lane to another third party and might be leaving India forever, for good, as consumer markets have crashed due to the pandemic and might not recover anytime soon. There is also another reason for the company planning its exit.

With Indian government deciding to cut the 50% tax on imported bikes and planning to bring it to a single-digit % fee, as Donald Trump has earlier snubbed India for such taxing, many more foreign bike sellers will be coming to India. If that happens, HD will find more competition in the already tight market.
