Deadly Floods: 20,000 Feared Dead!

Published by

A catastrophic flooding event in Libya has left thousands missing and the death toll may reach as high as 20,000, according to estimates.

The disaster occurred when Storm Daniel hit the northern coast of Libya, causing widespread devastation. The port city of Derna, the most severely affected, is still struggling to receive international aid due to damaged roads and infrastructure.

The situation is dire, with drinkable water in short supply, whole families killed, and limited access to medical care. The storm’s impact appears even worse than initially predicted, and hundreds of bodies are being buried collectively to prevent disease spread.

The International Organization for Migration reports that over 30,000 people have been displaced in Derna, and the death toll is yet to be verified. Aid agencies are working hard to reach the affected areas, and international assistance is gradually arriving, with countries like Egypt and the UK offering aid packages.

The disaster underscores the urgency of reuniting Libya’s divided administrations to coordinate relief efforts effectively.

Concerns also arise regarding the vulnerability of Derna and neighboring regions, which served as hubs for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean. The tragedy highlights the need for improved governance and disaster preparedness in the region.
