Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film, ‘Animal’, has stirred controversy, with its box office success overshadowed by criticism for glorifying toxic masculinity. The debate has now reached the Rajya Sabha, where Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan shared her concerns about the film, revealing that her daughter was deeply affected after watching it.
Ranjeet Ranjan expressed, ‘Cinema is a mirror of society. We have grown up watching cinema, and it can influence the youth. First, there were films like Kabir Singh and Pushpa, and now there is Animal. My daughter went to watch the film with her college friends, and walked out midway through because she couldn’t stop crying.’
The MP highlighted the portrayal of violence towards women in the film and voiced concerns about its potential impact on the youth. Referencing “Kabir Singh,” she criticized how the character’s actions are justified in the movie, leading people to consider him a role model, and expressed worry about witnessing similar violence in society.
Ranjeet Ranjan also raised objections to the use of the song “Arjan Vailly” in the film, a Punjabi war anthem played during a scene where Ranbir Kapoor’s character engages in a violent confrontation. The MP argued that the historical significance of the song, associated with Hari Singh Nalwa, could be misinterpreted in the context of a gang war, potentially hurting religious sentiments.
