India has experienced a surge in COVID-19 cases, with 614 new infections reported, marking the highest daily count since May 21. This rise follows the detection of the Coronavirus sub-variant JN.1 in Kerala, leading to an increase in cases across several states. The central government’s lab forum, Insacog, identified 19 sequences of the JN.1 sub-variant, with one case in Maharashtra and 18 in Goa. As a result, the total number of active cases in the country has risen to 2,311.
Kerala, particularly affected by the JN.1 variant, reported 292 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths within 24 hours. Nationally, 341 new infections were recorded on the same day, with the majority originating in Kerala. The death toll in the country stands at 5,33,321, with the recent deaths in Kerala contributing to a total of 72,056 COVID-related fatalities in the state since the pandemic began three years ago. Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized the need for a comprehensive government approach and encouraged preparedness measures, including regular mock drills in hospitals.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified the JN.1 variant as a “variant of interest,” noting that symptoms are generally mild to moderate. While the WHO reassures that this variant does not pose a significant threat to public health, concerns have been raised in India. Health authorities, including the central government and various state governments, are actively addressing the situation, issuing advisories, and conducting review meetings to ensure preparedness and effective communication with the public. Despite the rise in cases, the WHO emphasizes the overall mild nature of symptoms associated with the JN.1 variant.
